The COVID-19 pandemic has affected me and my colleagues greatly.
I recently moved jobs due to the high stress environment at my previous job. I started working at my local sports/leagues club and was loving everything about it. When the COVID pandemic hit Australia my shifts were not affected, it was business as usual.
Now that people have realised the gravity of the situation, customer numbers have dropped drastically. At first, I was only losing a shift or two a week. However, now the PM has introduced the social distancing rules, controlling the number of people allowed in certain sized spaces. This has resulted in all my shifts being cancelled, except for one next week which I believe will probably be my last.
My work is doing the right thing by prioritising people that have been with the club for longer, putting me right to the bottom of the list. As I’m still technically ‘employed’ and under the age of 22, I am not eligible for any Centrelink payments, leaving me with nothing to fall back on. At the moment I am relying on friends and family who I am very lucky to have.
The idea of not having my own money is starting to become a terrifying thought and my anxiety continues to grow as myself and the whole hospitality industry is in the dark over the next few months.
