I work in a successful restaurant in a shopping mall in the city. I’ve gone from 3-4 shifts a week, each ranging from 3 to 6 hours each, sometimes even longer to 1. This week I’m only rostered for a 3 and a half hour shift on a Sunday, which I’m told can be cancelled by my manager at any time. I live with my mother but I contribute towards rent and mostly groceries and basic foodstuffs. She is currently out of work, and while we can afford bills and have savings to fall back on, it’s going to be very tough having very little options for food and other basic needs week-by-week. It’s unlikely I’ll lose my job, but the restaurant will probably close down soon and I’ll have no income. My savings will probably be gone soon if I have to keep relying on it like I have. It’s been hard but I know it’s hitting a lot of people much worse. My coworkers who haven’t worked in the restaurant as long as me are concerned about their job security. I’m worried now, but I know things are about to get worse. It’s stressful and I’m just not sure what to do.
