Was meant to go to Europe, quit job, was replaced, couldn’t go to Europe, don’t have a job, can’t find new job because nowhere is hiring chefs, now still have to pay living costs with no real idea of when things will be ok.

I had all my shifts cancelled until further notice.

For the safety of everyone my work place has had to cancel it’s events… over 500 have been cancelled or postponed until 2021. My work future for that great company looks bleak.

I have no shifts for the foreseeable future and no promise of more even if things to get better. I’m scared, I’m not sleeping, or eating. I suppose that’s a good thing, I can’t afford to.

They have cut all casual shifts from this weeks roster, I lost 3 shifts and approximately $300-$400 in pay I’m a student so I need the money to help with bills

I have no clue when I’ll be able to return to work or when I’ll have access to special leave.

I’m a student doing a full time post graduate, so my week is spent studying. I only have time to work 2, 8 hours night shifts a week and that earned me just enough to cover rent and very basic necessities. Now I dont have that income I’m going to have to be reliant on centrelink (which is something i didn’t want to do).

Cancellation of all events has removed my entire schedule. I had three months with barely a day off and now I’ll be lucky if I get any work

Unfortunately my work can no longer afford to employ the causal staff for the foreseeable future as due to the new regulations imposed by covid-19, there has been a massive decrease in customers. Not only has this affected my hospitality job but almost all others therefore making it impossible to get another job in this sector. This has caused financial hardship for myself as I have no idea how I’m going to be able to […]

Have gone from being be able to survive comfortably, to almost all of my income shredded with one day’s notice. I now do not make enough to pay rent, let alone food. I’m starting to sell my belongings (TV, microwave, sentimental jewellery, etc) in order to make ends meet and am having to rely on soup kitchens for food. I have 18yrs experience in the industry, 15yrs in senior management, I’m looking for work but […]

The 100 per room limit essentially shut down my entire events department at [my work].

Businesses can’t afford to keep us employed as revenue dropped unbelievably over a 24 hour period. The Monday was dead by Tuesday everyone’s shifts were canceled and then The entirety of the employer group’s casuals were dropped by the Wednesday

Jules, Chef, 34.

As casual my shifts have been reduced – I have gone from 26 hours to 12. I really need the hours as I’m currently doing my masters and I don’t receive student benefits. I can’t rely on my partner for financial support because he too is casual, and his hours have also been reduced. Fortunately, my workplace has decided to remain open for now. Our General Manager has put in place health and safety posters […]

I’m the head chef of an iconic, award winning restaurant in Brisbane. And along with many other small hospo businesses we’re on the brink of collapse. In our precinct there are six restaurants. One is trading at reduced hours. One is closing for the next month and three have already collapsed. We have seen our average customers drop from 200 people a day, down to about 30. This isn’t enough to cover bills, let alone […]

COVID-19 has put me in an unprecedented position, I’m unemployed and within a week of being unable to pay rent. As a casual hospitality worker, the current pandemic has severely impacted my life. Starting a new job at a hotel two weeks ago (after a period of unemployment), I saw an opportunity to finally achieve some semblance of financial stability; a hard ask for a working student even in normal conditions.  On Monday, two conferences […]

Eamon, Barista, age 23

I work at a cafe at a big university.  My employer has always been pretty good – we get award rates, penalties, and a generally positive and transparent attitude to staff. We’ve had our shifts cut back significantly twice this week. And then today, we heard all shifts are being cancelled indefinitely for casual staff as of next week.   I asked one of the bosses what will be happening if the universities are forced to […]

Hollie, Barista, age 26

I’m a barista, and had already been struggling to pick up shifts over the semester break as I’m a casual worker and the café I work at is on a university campus. I was looking forward to things picking up as classes went back, and was planning on trying to get some savings together. I didn’t get the chance. I went into work last Friday for my regular shift, and that evening I got an […]
